If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Sigh.

It's been a little over four months since I bought my R Spec... and I'm finally having one of those nightmare service situations I was hoping wouldn't plague my Hyundai as they continuously did my Volkswagen.

Here's the scoop:

Last week
I took the car in for a 3,750 oil change. They did their usual checks, and told me (as expected) that the brakes, tires, fluids and everything else was tip-top. I had them look at my driver's window, however. I told them that there was road noise when the window was all the way up, and that by "tapping" the window button down slightly, the window would seal and the road noise would go away. When I picked up the car, they said "they couldn't replicate the problem". Whatever, I can deal.

Saturday
As I am pulling into my garage, I felt a stiffness in the steering. At first I chucked it up to the aging of the driveway - it's clearly worn down where near the wheels "track" as I pull into the garage. It bothered me a little... but life goes on.

Monday
However, on Monday, I felt it again pulling out of the garage, and then again pulling into my parking spot at work. This was WAY more noticeable, however, and I called my dealer to set an appointment. They were busy due to the holiday, but agreed to take a look at it Thursday. Between Monday and Thursday, I tried to drive my wife's car, as I was worried enough about the steering to avoid driving needlessly. A couple of times, the stiffness gave way to an almost complete "stop", or "bump" in the steering. This was only noticeable at low speeds. However, even normal driving was feeling much heavier than usual.

Thursday
I dropped off the car. I told the lady at the desk that I was waiting in the lobby so that I could show the tech what the issues were. Tech comes out, and asks me to show him. I asked what had he looked at first, and he said, "nothing, I wanted to see it from you first." Fine.

We go in the car, I turn it on, and I show him the steering is stiff. He says, "I don't feel anything". I try again, and this time, I feel the stiffness AND the bump." He didn't see it, tries himself, and says, "Nothing. Seems fine". I ask him to check a few things and make sure there isn't a problem, and while we're out, can he check the window. We go for a test drive - he drives, and "can't hear any wind noise". (REALLY???) I ask him to tap the window, and he opens it instead. At this point, I'm losing my patience, so I ask him to go back and check the steering. I told him "I wasn't making this up... and I wouldn't waste my time or his if I wasn't concerned." He responds with a cold "Well OBVIOUSLY!"

A couple hours later, I get my car back. He said he reset the steering (something or other). I don't recall what he called it exactly, but it must have been off a little, since he took the trouble of resetting it. I drive home, and the steering is unchanged.

Today
I pull out of the garage, and I have NO POWER STEERING WHATSOEVER. Gone. Not only that, it's worse... I can barely turn the wheel, power steering or no.

I called Hyundai Roadside Assistance, and asked for a tow to the dealer (3 or 4 miles from my house, not too bad). I turn the car off, I wait 5 minutes, turn it on again, and check the steering. Still not working.

Tow truck arrives 30 minutes later... and I turn the car on. Steering is working again. OF COURSE IT IS. The dude checks the power steering fluid, and it's fine. I had checked it myself every day for a week, and it was always fine. I told him no need to tow it, I'll drive it to the dealer, but ask him if he can follow me JUST IN CASE. He agrees.

First intersection we run into, he goes the other way!!!!

Oo

I get to the dealer, lady looks at me like I'm nuts. The tech from yesterday sees me and hides in the garage. I left the car. I asked them to pretty please (with sugar on top) find out what is wrong with my car. Lady was really nice.

The waiting is killing me.

The honeymoon is over. I don't love her any less... but the spark is gone.

I hope this works out well for you. I have noticed something is off with my steering as well. I took the car in within three or four weeks of purchase for a check up. Same thing...steering alignment was off...they did some work to it. Felt better the first few days and then returned to the previous.

Most of the time it pulls right but sometimes it pulls left. and yes..I am aware the pitch of the paving and road grooves can effect the steering but this is more noticeable than my previous cars.

I am putting up with it for now...not sure I want them to tinker with it too much. I will look forward to hearing how things work out for you. Good luck!

I think its time to find a dealer that really gives a Sh--, I've been fortunate to find one near me and the last 2 1/2 years have been a pleasure!

I had a similar issue to this, though I didn't lose power steering completely, just in certain driving situations. I took it to the dealer numersous times and they never felt the issue as I did. They called some mechanic guru high up in Hyundai and he told them to switch out the rack and pinion, they did and the problem has gone away. Hope this helps.

A defective steering rack might make sense... but an electronic issue seems more plausible to me, personally - why else would turning the car off for half an hour all of a sudden fix a mechanical issue?

I wish I knew this stuff.

Valve in steering rack or electrical in steering system.

If they haven't looked there... I'll be sure to mention it to them. I never got a call at the end of the day yesterday letting me know the status. It was still "undiagnosed" when I called around 2:30pm. That means they didn't even look at it, and don't plan to until at least Monday.

They did say they'd get me a rental. I just want my car back. I miss her.

Sigh again.

Who have you been talking to at the dealer? I would start with the service manager. If that doesn't help, I'd contact the owner directly. Another option would be to find another dealer, which may be an option depending on your location. If your dealer doesn't take care of the problem and there are others in the area with decent reputations, I'd call them, explain the situation, and let them earn your business.

Well... they gave me a loaner yesterday. Lady said they need to talk to Hyundai, and likely the car needs a new "module".

Sounds to me like they really don't know what's up. Which is even more interesting since the lady at the counter told me I probably won't have it back until Friday, because the module has to be shipped.

Hmmm......

Module, huh? Sounds generic. Sort of like being told by a surgeon that they're going to remove an organ. :)

What did they give you as a loaner? (Never mind - just read your Sonata post.)

I'm calling tomorrow to find out what's going on... I don't like that my dealer has no clue what's wrong with a brand new car, and they have to call "Hyundai" to figure it out.

They should contact somebody else?

Yeah, EXACTLY! What kind of mechanic can't figure out what's wrong with a car?

HMA called me just now to get some feedback on the roadside assistance call. I don't think she knew what she was getting into.

She did mention the dealer reached out to an HMA parts manager regarding a new "EHPS"? Whatever that means. Bottom line is they only called on Monday. Today is Wednesday and HMA STILL hasn't responded.

That is unacceptable to me. Two days with no call back is two extra days of me not having my $40k+ vehicle.

This is infuriating. The worst part is... I FREAKING LOVE MY CAR!

Just called the service department. They were told they need to replace the power steering module - pretty sure they mean the EHPS steering valve. The part is back-ordered until July 18th.

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?

I asked them if they knew 100% that this would fix it. She said, "yes, they're 100% sure." I'm not sure I share her confidence to be honest.

So... figure the part is back-ordered until the 18th. Since these things are never on time, let's say 20th. Then a couple more days to ship the part, and a couple more days to install and what not.

I'm looking at AT LEAST two full weeks without my brand new vehicle.

Hyundai Service.... you've let me down.

Is it not safe to drive until the part comes in??

Dude... the car has no power steering whatsoever. It might actually be worse than that - I've driven cars without power steering that were BUILT that way... and that's not what this feels like. I'm afraid forcing that steering wheel will do other, more permanent damage to other steering components.

Regardless... I just got off the phone with HMA Genesis service. Diana, the service lady, was really nice. She told me HMA can usually procure parts much faster than the dealer, so she was gonna do her best to get the information on part # from my dealer, and she would get the ball rolling on locating a part.

I hope she finds one. I need my Genny back.

Sounds like an odd repair for a Genesis. You're one of a kind Ruissimo!:D

Yeah... I know. I'm unique, just like everyone else.

It happens to any brand. I had a loaner from my Acura dealer for nearly a month waiting on a part. During that time I had several trips planned so when I returned the loader I had put about 4500 miles on their new Volvo. (The Acura dealer here also sells Volvo) Be calm and enjoy using the dealer's car.
