ABEL Racing on Dyno Jet 224. Midwest City, OK
MotorSportAuthority cat deletes

all stock: 328hp at wheels, 313 torque

MSA cat deletes with stock mufflers & 2 stock cats: 342.70 Wheel Horsepower, 320 torque

Viagra Cold Air Intake...with stock mufflers and 4 cats... 344hp at wheels. Do to great results, we are working on a CAI right now....... Test shows the great potential we have with a good CAI set up. WOW!

We did it!
ABEL Racing Cold Air Intake with MSA cat deletes & stock mufflers & 2 stock cats: 354whp, 328 torque

You will not believe the video. Sound is amazing at WOT...deep throaty V8 muscle.

I highly recommend the MSA cat deletes. Proven 14-15hp gain at wheels.

The ABEL Racing CAI adds another 15hp at wheels and sounds amazing!!! 30whp gains at end of day!!!!!!!
If there is any interest on this forum, please PM me.

Very nice...

I am surprised that there is so much loss to the wheels.. Normally a car Dynos ~15% lower then posted HP... I would have thought the Rspec would Dyno around 370 rwhp...

I agree. Remember this car has 4 catalytic converters, 2 air boxes, internal flapper in air box, and HUGE table size exhaust mufflers. And my car only has 2000 miles on it. Still tight. Among the variables which determine horsepower etc....todays test was really about the improvement you get with bolt on parts like motor sport authority and ABEL Racing Cold Air Intake. 30 Wheel Horse Power is quite impressive considering the little investment.

I think you have more whp than that dyno shows. I have found 2 separate hp measurements using different dyno brands and both were arround 360 whp (340 lb-ft) - bone stock R-Spec. The transmission losses are around 15% for 8 speed AT which makes sense.

I agree forzza1. We will go back for a tune & figure why the dyno is off. The car is definitely faster and feeling like a 470hp car.

That is awesome Driv 2000. Do you remember what gear they dyno'd in ? (Should be 5th since it is 1:1 ratio) Excellent gains. I missed my dyno appointment, but I plan to do one soon so we will have more data points.

Did you disable the ESC for this test?
(I don't mean putting it in 'Less-Nanny" mode by pressing the ESC button, I mean really disable it)

I'm curious if you did not, did the ESC system show any signs of interfering with the test results?

From the tests on my last "fun" car, we saw about 20% loss through the drive-train (it was also an Auto) and ran it in 4th, which was 1:1
We ran tests with the ESC in all three modes (100%, 50% and OFF) and at least on the Chrysler, the charts showed it.
For some reason, when the ESC was on the motor wanted to hesitate at times.
Never did figure out why...maybe it was something in the program.

Of course the Genesis is a completely different animal and maybe the ESC would have no effect at all... just curious.

Thanks! We did not unplug the fuse for ESC, but we did push he ESC OFF, Eco off, & AC off.

Did all pulls in 4th.

Driv200,
Are you still considering removing the resonator?
Thanks

Skywagon, not at this time. Simply because I do not have any drone issues and my car is stock quiet for normal driving and absolutely fabulous sounding when on the throttle! Seriously, it's about as much fun sounding as my Z06 was with exhaust upgrade.

I may consider doing it if more power gains are available. But for now, I am amazed how great my set up is working.

Ran a 300 SRT8 last night and pulled quite strongly from a stoplight!

Can I email someone iPhone vids to post links please of Dyno and sound?

I have installed for over 5K miles a similar system using the Motorsports Authority aft cats delete and a K&N cone filter using the OEM intake tract.
I considered using an Abel look-alike aluminum tubing, and choose the OEM for several reasons.
1. While aluminum reflects heat nicely, it absorbs it also releasing it more slowly than plastic, which has comparatively less mass. Black plastic OEM intake can be easily and cheaply made reflective with aluminum foil tape.
2. The OEM intake track is strongly attached to the motor by bolts.
3. The OEM intake tract does draw outside air from the high pressure area in front of the car.
4. The OEM intake has a Hemholtz (sic) muffler/baffle, which attenuates intake sound without performance loss.
The Abel system, as illustrated, appears to draw most of its intake air from under the hood. I think it needs an engineered partition that provides an effective air box isolating the air filter from motor heat.
As for warranty issues, as a practical matter it will have some effect. Recently, I brought my R-Spec to my friendly dealer for a warranty claim on the infamous surround sound problem. The dealer contacted Hyundai Tech Support which waffled on the problem, citing that they could not "rule out" the K&N as causation. This is despite the law clearly placing the burden of proof on the manufacturer to demonstrate that an aftermarket mod has caused the fault.
My intake system is easily reversible, so I will reverse it for my next dealer visit.

Rey,
* ABEL Racing left the stock lip-trim which directs air from grill to the CAI
* We removed the waffle. It serves no purpose for my needs & quiets sound
* Not concerned with temp diff of alum vs plastic for normal driving
* Heat wrap for aluminum available too

Thanks for heads up about dealer & warranty. Like you, I can snap back in the air box in minutes. I wish you could hear and experience the 5.0 Tau V8 like I am with this CAI. It's awesome sounding.

Help me out here . . . I have always thought parasitic power loss occurred AFTER the flywheel not with intake and exhaust (Cats, etc.).

Exbmwguy, I will have to leave those hard questions to the smart ones on this forum. I just know..."Breathe in....Breathe out"

Check out external vid of sound in above post. This vid shows interior sound.

Driv 200, my experience with intake sound echos yours. Under normal steady-state cruise and light throttle acceleration there is virtually no increase in sound.

This is my 3rd Genesis V8. Had an '09 and an '11, all with cone filter mods, and aft cat deletes. All showed a material power increase. I have not dynoed any of my Genesis. But as a general rule one's "seat of pants dyno" does not register changes of much less than 10%.

I think that underhood intake air temp is a critical factor. Most dyno pulls are with the hood open and air filter fully exposed to ambient air. Intake air temp with a closed hood is often 20+ degrees warmer than ambient air. I think the formula is that power decreases 1% for ever three degrees F. in air temperature increase. Try doing a dyno pull with your hood closed sometime. I think you will be surprised by the power loss.

Pull the ESC fuse and try that again, but don't do it on a road with anyone around as you will most likely end up "Drivin' Sideways, down the Highways"

Even stock, without the ESC enabled this thing is a beast to control.
But it sure can do a nice power-slide at 35+.
Try it any slower and you spin like the teacups at Disneyland..

Now, who was that is having a sale on 19" Bridgestones this week...and just how do I remove 1/8" of melted rubber from the side panels of my car??...

All-in-all this is a fun car, but I seriously doubt it could hang with my old Srt 8 when it was stock. Just one 15 second "button" hack/mod to the SRT and it would hit 175MPH+ off the show room floor.

Tim,

I can't wait to pull the ESC fuse! "Which fuse is it?"

My dad had a SRT 8 for 4 years and I put a CAI and exhaust on it. Great car I agree, but I would put my money on this Rspec. I posted a SRT8 stop light experience elsewhere on this forum. It was a straight line launch from light and I pulled away quite strongly. I am sure it will always be a good match when I find one next to me at a stoplight.

I have a copies of my stock SRT8 Dyno runs (looking for them now) and I'll post them soon.

As I recall, it was:
359WHP with the stock airbox and Cats on.
374WHP CAI Installed and Cats out.

Then I went all-out with the Vortec Supercharger and other mods and pushed it to +580WHP

My best guess is the guy driving the SRT8 didn't know how to run it proper...or was afraid to do it.
Don't get me wrong, I like my R-Spec just fine, but it is more than a liter smaller and not a Hemi.

Here is an example of a Stock 2006 300C/SRT8 with just Cold Air, 93peftw/CAI canned tune, 180 tstat
ndx84w.jpg

I would not want to mess with that while driving my R-Spec...CAI or not.
