  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Removing Shifter Knob?

I would like to route a sirius antenna cable into the storage area of the center console, but have not been able to remove the shifter knob (an consequently the console itself). Per Hyundai's technical site, it appears that the knob is just pressed onto the shifter lever, but if so, it's really stuck onto the shaft. Has anyone attempted this? If so, how did one remove the knob without damage? So far, all other parts have been removed without problem starting with the rear parcel shelf and moving forward. To Hyundai's credit, all the trim fits well and easy to remove and replace. The car seems very well designed and constructed.

I saw the diagram, and also thought it's just pressed in.
Tried pulling it out just for shiz and giggles... didn't budge.
Not sure what else is holding it in place.

I agree. Removed the door panels, seats, and trunk liners, etc. Very well built car indeed.

Genesis 3.8 shifter knob can be removed by pulling it (knob) straight up. It's going to be a little hard and it will feel like you are going to break something while pulling it out. But it will come out, there are no screws to remove or locks to undo. It will easily pop back on. I pulled mine out when I had to route wires thru the console.

Many thanks to Nearwater and Solano. You confirmed that shift knob was a friction fit to lever and, boy, what a fit. Tried pulling with hands, but due awkward position, made up a simple tool instead. Using a notched 18" length of plywood and second 13" piece I constructed a simple lever device. I placed 13" piece virtically on passenger side of console to serve as a fulcrum. I hooked the base of knob in notch of 18" piece and placed one end on top of fulcrum. Then one just pulls up on the other end and knobs comes off, but it stills requires a lot of force. However, there is no damage to console or one's lower back.

That's ingenious!
I'll use your method if I ever need to remove that little son of a gun. :)

Per your request are three photo of my special "tool". From photo one, you can see that it just two pieces of (scrap) wood. The longer one, made of plywood, is notched (at the blue painter's tape) to the size of the shifter shaft. The second has a small cleat attached to one end. Photos 2 and 3 show the two positioned on the knob/shaft. One simply lifts the end on the passenger-seat side and the knob will pop off. It will not damage the knob of any other items. The only critical measurements is the length of the fulcum side and the width of the notch. Also, since the notched piece is so thin, I'd recommend plywood as a single-ply board will likely break under the force.

Looks like this would work on my 2016. Thanks for the pics, they really did help. I know it is an old thread, but it easily addressed what I was trying to do and I had to express my gratitude.

Pull up on it like you are Ronnie Coleman. I almost knocked myself out when it finally came off. Shit is ridiculous.

I usually just turn it a 1/4 turn counter clockwise and pull upward, comes off everytime.

Hopefully it's as easy as you say. I'm going to try it this weekend assuming the temperature can reach at least 25 degrees or so. I assume that I need to remove the gear selector knob in order to remove enough stuff to get to the DIS knob, or whatever it's called, that changes the navigation and stereo and stuff. If I install a new DIS knob, do I have to do anything afterward to reset the stereo or anything else you know of?

No reset needed on my 2012 R-Spec Tech package.

Darn it, I forgot to try the turn a 1/4 turn trick. I did pull up on it like a Mo-Fo and it popped off. I was able to successfully replace the DIS controller piece. That solved problem number 1 I had. Problem number 2 though is I still have no sound from the stereo. I bought this car used knowing there was some stuff wrong with it, but I did not realized just HOW MUCH was wrong with it. Apparently people have to replace the amps on these cars a lot. I think that will be my next try to get the stereo working. I tried to do a reset procedure that somebody mentioned by going in the engineering menu, but I didn't have the choice on my screen that the guy who wrote the instructions had on his screen (to get into FULL engineering mode).....so maybe the guy had the 3.8, and I have the 2009 4.6....maybe the engineering menu is different on the two cars. Bummer :-(.

I just wish I could find a step-by-step list that somebody has put together of things to try if there's no sound from the stereo.....preferably the list would be ordered from easiest (or most common) issue to check, down to the most difficult (or uncommon) issue. I did check the 10A fuse on the left side of the dash, but that wasn't the issue. If only it was that easy!

No sound is typically a tripped breaker in the driver side fuse panel.
It's the only fuse with tabs sticking out to pull on.

It trips on me about 3 times a year, haven't really dug into why it does it, though I have my suspicions that it's the amp clipping.

Mine is a 30 amp
