First I must appologize for all of the individual threads, but for some reason every time I try to post something in an open thread I get this:
  1. The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 1 characters.
I have tried to write back many times but I get this message every time. The only option for me is to start a new thread as I am doing now...again. I know what you are thinking, but I have tried over the past couple of days on three different computers,

I went to Brad Benson Hyundai in NJ because I heard some advertising on the radio that I liked for a change. Instead of staying local, I drove the 40 miles to his dealership. They also had 30 Genesis sedans on the lot so it seemed I would have a good choice. I started out with a test drive of a 4.6 tech. The ride wasn't as good as the 2007 Camry I drove there in. I have read about the issues with the suspension and decided to try a 3.8 to see where the differences were.

The 4.6 rode as if it had bad rear struts. There seemed to be too much bouncing but primarily from the back. The 3.8 actually rode better as far as the bouncing was concerned, but it was still too harsh for my taste. So for the heck of it, I drove a different 4.6 afterwards to see if there was any difference. It wasn't quite as bouncy, but still not good. Everything else on the car was terrific. All of the toys were done well...each button and knob within reach...I would give her a 10 for the money, but the ride kept me from immediately saying I wanted it. But at the salesman's pleading I went in to "throw some numbers around" and that's where it all went bad.
My sales rep was a younger kid from Staten Island. A little too cocky, but not terrible. I explained to him and his fast talking sales manager that I buy cars every year or two and completely understand how the game works, even down to the F&I guys. I stated that I wasn't there to play games, and they had one opportunity to give me the right numbers the first time. I wanted to know how much for my trade, and how much for the car. I specifically said that I didn't want to talk about monthly payments until we got past the pricing, but also mentioned that if they couldn't get near my magic number (monthly payment) that we shouldn't waste my time or theirs. I understand basic math, and if it doesn't work, it doesn't work...no problem. I also mentioned that I didn't want them to run my credit if they wouldn't be close because too many inqireys hurts your rating. So off goes Mr. fast talker for a while and comes back to the desk with his arms in the air like a ref does when a field goal is kicked. I sit back down and the guy throws a monthly payment of $150 more per month than I told them my limit was. I looked at him and said "I didn't want to talk payment unless you had the payoff and the sales numbers". He said something to the effect of "so does your wife need to be here to give the okay or are you able to make your own decisions. I said look...I make my own decisions, but if you are trying to push me in to a car by playing the testosterone game, your playing with the wrong guy; now let's see the numbers. He says...well the payoff on your 07 Camry (with 12,000 miles) is like 12 or 13. I said, well there's a big difference between the two, which one is it? He starts to throw a bunch of other BS at me and I ask him what about the price of the car? He says, I don't have that yet.
At this point I'm pissed. I asked him for three things and warned him not to play the game with me, and he did everything I asked him not to do. I looked at him and voiced my dis-pleasure to him and he proceeded to tell my why I was wrong until I told him to shut up and listen. I continued by saying if you don't have the price of the car, how can you come to me with any payment amount? His answer was that we would work it out later. I asked for my keys so I could leave and all they did was argue with me. 5 minutes of asking both the salesman and his sales manager and they just kept trying to get me to hear them out, but I was done. Now I start yelling (which I have never done before in any dealership anywhere) get me my Effin keys. So another manager comes over and wants me to explain to him what the problem is and I ask him at least 5 times for my keys, and he just keeps repeating; maybe I can help get you in to the car. AT that point I threatened to call the cops if that was what it would take to get my keys. The third guy wouldn't give up. I walked outside to keep from exploding on them and now a 4th manager walks out to me. He explains that he had been watching the situation and appologized for what had happend. He had my keys in his hand, but wanted to see if there was any way of salvaging the situation. I said yes...give me my keys. This guy was hell bent on giving me numbers and threw out the old...if I can meet the numbers you are looking for will you buy a car? This wasn't just badgering, it was insanity. I explained that if he could get to the right number, that meant that they were trying to screw me for an extra $150 per month at 84 months...totalling over $12,000 and I won't do business with a company like that. Still the guy wouldn't quit. He WANTED to give me the numbers I had asked for. I told him to call me with them, but he insisted I wait for them so at least I would know. So they went inside, and walked to my car and drove away. So they called my cell phone three times and finally left a message. The floor manager actually tried to make me feel guilty for leaving in the beggining of the message and then threw out the numbers. The sad thing is, that based on those numbers they would have been close enough for me to make the deal. But they blew it. I wouldn't buy a car from them at 50% off of MSRP.

Understand that I expect they may somehow see this thread because they are "big on the boards" so I have not exagerated in the least, and in fact have left alot off. I have purchased over 25 cars in my life and have never had such a bad experience. I would like to chalk it up to one bad apple, there were at least three...I haven't made my mind up yet on the original kid.

It dawned on me that you rarely get treated right by guys who push paper. Maybe Hyundai should think about seperate dealerships for their high end cars. I think I may have to go back to Infiniti, or maybe give Lexus a shot.

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

That's brutal. :( Nothing more to say. If I lived in that area I'd never give Brad Benson the privilege of my patronage.

I really hope your next buying experience - no matter who it's with - works out better for you.

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

I learned a long time ago that when buying a new car and you have a trade-in, you take 2 sets of keys with you. When they don't give you the keys to your trade-in (just about all dealers play that trick), then pull out your second set and tell them you are leaving and will pick up the other keys later. At this point they know you are an experienced car buyer. Usually they will give you their best offer pretty quickly and give your keys back if you don't accept it, or just leave without them and pick them up later.

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

That's nothing short of deplorable. How do these gems sleep at night.
Well, they only ruin their own reputation, and when you lose that, you lose everything. So move on and fun finding the car and dealership that won't disrespect you like that.

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

I still couldn't post using the quick reply, but "reply with quote" worked (although there is no quote).

I made it very clear to them how well versed I am at the buying process, and even interrupted the salesman twice to ask him to stop with the "canned" pitch. In the two dozen or so new cars I have bought, this is absolutely the worst dealership I have ever encountered. It wasn't just at one level, it was everyone from the salesman to the floor manager. Everyone continued to try to get me to buy, regardless of how angry I became. The scary part is they rank #2 in the country for Hyundai. The sad reality for me is that the experience has taken away any thought of buying a Hyundai.

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

I got my price online, so that I wouldn't have to dick around with salesman. I suggest doing same.

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

I agree that you had a very bad buying experience, but there is no guarantee that if they were a "separate dealerships for their high end cars" that you would have gotten any better treatment with this dealer. It is a shame because the Genesis is such a wonderful car.

I have two suggestions for you. First, contact Hyundai zone office and report your treatment to them. Dealers seem to be really nervous with poor surveys about themselves. Second, join Hyundai Think tank, and if accepted, you can buy any Hyundai at dealer invoice less 2% and less advertising. This is their vendor pricing. I got my Genesis coupe using this. ($29,000 list price for $26,640). This would be your best deal.

If you liked the car, then don't give up. Go to another dealer.

edited to add the following: From the ThinkTank forum..."If you know other Hyundai enthusiasts who would like to be a part of our community, invite them to join! Send them the following link and if they qualify, they will be able to participate to help us shape Hyundai:"

I don't even start to talk money until they give me the keys back after they evaluate my trade. First thing I say is give me back my keys. Only after I get them back do we talk money.

Here in Central Florida, before Bill Heard Chevrolet in Sanford went belly up, the police were called to their dealership a few times, because they would not return keys after evaluation, and at least twice, because people were prevented (read; locked in) from leaving the dealership. I shouted with joy when they went belly up.

Stay clear of Brad Benson

I tried to inquire there about the Genesis; they treated me like a piece of crap. I ended buying from Flemington Hyundai, with pleasant experience, good price, and good service after that. A little longer drive, but worth it.

Trust me, it is much more fun to bring 2 sets of keys and then see the terror in their faces when you pull out the second set of keys.

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

My buddy owns a Cadillac dealership. He's had a few customers who have fallen victim to the local Nissan dealer's tactics. One in particular couldn't get his keys back - the dealer wouldn't return his car until he agreed to test drive the Nissan. The customer test drove it right over to my buddy's Cadillac dealership... my buddy sent one of his reps back with the Nissan to retrieve the customer's car.

The first Hyundai dealership I went to, they did the trick where they park a car at the end of the aisle then when I pulled down it, they blocked me in with a golf cart. The salesman started his spiel and it quickly escalated into a fit of rage. I told the salesman he had 15 seconds to move the golf cart, or I would. He continued to babble, so I got on the golf cart, moved it out of the way then removed the key and threw it across the parking lot. I told the salesman if he got in my way, I'd run him over (and I would have at that point.)

I can't stand dealer games. I can't believe anyone buys a car from someone who employs those types of tactics.

I confess to being dumb as a bag of rocks and find this a stroke of absolute genius. I've bought MANY cars in my lifetime ... for me, for my wife, for my kids ... and invariably accessing my keys when ready to walk has been a recurring nuisance. I'll never visit a dealership without the backup keys/transmitter again. Leave THEM as the dribbling fools they set themselves up to be.

Thanks.

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

Now with cars (like our Genesis') that use the keyless (FOB) system, I would just go out and stand next to the car while they start it up and do their thing, then walk away. Car will still run, but once they shut it off, it will not restart, and you still have your fob in your pocket.

I have come to love those games. You just have to play it better than them. It's great fun!

At a Rick Case Hyundai dealer (not where I ended up buying), the said they needed to take the car around back to their service department to inspect it, so having the keyless system probably wouldn't help because they would just say they needed the key anyway.

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

I don't talk about trade in until i settled down my new car.
then, the trade in is just another buying/selling negoiation.

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

I learned this time around that the best way to buy a car is to get the price before even entering the dealership. I called several dealers, told them the car I wanted and said that I would be buying in the next couple of days. I then either e-mailed or faxed my specs, and said that the person with the best price would get my business. If I had gone in there and saw that the price was any different from what we agreed upon, I would have left. I can say, aside from waiting around to sign papers, it was the easiest car buying experience I have ever had.

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

I've only had one dealer ever pull the "keep the keys" trick. It was a "luxury" dealer and they didn't outright say they wouldn't give me the keys, but they tried to claim that they had "misplaced" them. My solution to this was to help them "find" the keys by walking behind the sales manager desk and "cleaning up" for them. I didn't cause any real damage (nor would I have), just picked up a few papers, but they didn't know that and somehow they found my keys in about 5 seconds after that. They dealer was pretty short lived in the area.

I'm sorry to hear so many bad experiences with Hyundai dealers. My dealer treated me like a king, both during the sale and for what little service I've had to get (just oil changes so far).

Re: Why I won't be buying a new Genesis

I wish more people would use http://cardealer411.com to post these terrible experiences. In any event, I wouldn't have purchased from these guys either. I never had to deal with anything like this... I'm moving this to dealership experiences...

I had the best experience from my local Hyundai Dealer. I leased a 3.8 premium plus with cargo tray and ipod cable . I negotiated the price over the e-mail. Then we calculated the payments from that price. Went to the dealership, signed the papers and drove the car out in 45mins.
Always...and always do dealing over the internet. I HATE to walk in to the dealership to negotiate on a car price.
My negotiated price was 31,333 if you are wondering.
