  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm hoping it's a one-time thing, but my Genesis died mysteriously this morning.

I started up the car to warm up, left the key fob in the cupholder (as I tend to do when I exit the car lest the annoying "key out of vehicle" alarm go off). I spent about 2 minutes hosing off the little bit of ash that had accumulated from the SoCal wildfires. I got back into the car, released the parking brake, shifted into Drive, and then...

The entire car shut off, including the engine, A/C, and DIS. The only things on were the yellow "vehicle key" icon on the tach and the cluster LCD, which prompted "Please shift into Park." I couldn't shift into Park. So I shifted into Neutral and hit the start button. Everything fired up as normal.

Very wierd.

Obviously the car didn't appreciate you leaving it alone, the early morning shower, or having the key tossed into the hot coffee in the cupholder :D;)

that is odd. Starting then dying then starting right back up. I wonder if there is any type of kill mechanism associated with the parking brake being engaged?

Yeah, very strange. Anyone know what the exact reason why the yellow silhouette of a key over a car means (it's the light on the tach that turned on)? Perhaps the car thought the key walked out of range of the car, even though it was sitting 15 inches from the dash? Anyone know what happens if you do walk the fob completely out of range of the car when the engine is on?

I do that a number of times. I took the fob with me and walked bavk to my house. The car sound the "no key in car" beeping but the engine still runs. When I got back into the car everything continue to run as normal.

I was in the BMW dealer when I had the parking brake engaged and I tried to drive away. I backed up as normal, and as I was creeping through the lot the car got mad at me and an alarm pining went off inside and the car told me "Parking Brake Engaged". The car did not turn off, but it warned me visually and audibly.

That's the "immobilizer" icon: for cars with the "smart key" system (US models I presume, keyless ignition basically) the Genesis:
* Blinks this light if you try to start and the car doesn't detect the key nearby.
* If you push the START button without holding the brake the light should turn ON. If it goes out after a couple seconds, there is an issue with the keyless/immobilizer system.

I did have one issue with my car goofing up; I don't remember if it stalled or exactly what it did... but I triggered the event by trying to shift out of Park too quickly after starting the engine. I remember the "easy access" seat motion stopped mid-travel and other bad lights/sounds going off... I can't recall if the engine stalled or not though.

My issue is a little different. I normally carry the smart key in my pocket and use the door handle button to open and enter the car. A week ago I did that but then the car would not start and the immobilizer light was on solid. Had to jump it to get started. Went to the dealer, thinking it might be a battery problem, no the battery checked out fine. Dealer had no other input. I have found that if I use the smart key open button to enter the car, that seems to clear up the problem. I am getting annoyed in that I never know if the car will start or not. I've (hopefully logically) narrowed the problem down to one of the following:

1. Flaky smart key, although using my wifes key did not solve the problem
2. A bluetooth issue as I think that is the communication method between the
smart key and the cars computer. I've also had blutooth phone problems.
3. Software glitch in the cars computer.

Next step is to download and install the bluetooth firmware upgrade to see if that has any effect.

I had intermittent Bluetooth problems that were corrected by a visit to the dealer. The technician had a tough time with this, by the way. He worked on the car for over two hours and called Hyundia at least twice for instructions. His report to me was that the Bluetooth software had to be reset.
