Default Hyundai July Genesis Sales: 2,015

Remove this ad
Hyundai Motor America today announced July sales of 45,553 units, a 21 percent increase over last month and 12 percent increase compared with July 2008. This marks the seventh consecutive month of year-over-year retail share gains, and another all-time record retail market share performance. Cash-for-clunkers deals accounted for 22 percent of Hyundai sales.

Hyundai's Central region, comprised of 13 central and midwestern heartland states and about 160 dealers, was Hyundai's best-performing region on a year-over-year basis in July, recording an all-time, any-month sales record. Sales for the month were up 21 percent over a year ago and up 60 percent over June. "In Detroit, sales were up 48 percent from June, and we had an all-time July record in Chicago," said Brian O'Malley, general manager, Central Region.

Looks like they should stick a fork in the Azera; only 306 sold last month, 2,257 for the year, versus 12,251 last year.

There is nothing wrong w/ the Azera that a refresh and more marketing wouldn't fix. Hyundai spends VERY little money marketing the Azera in the U.S. so it's no wonder the public has forgot about it. Same goes for the Veracruz. Good vehicles, but Hyundai needs to do more to get the word out about them. I doubt they'll kill the Azera because it's quite popular in Korea where it is known as the Grandeur.

As for the Genesis sales, it would seem the Genesis coupe is not selling nearly as well as Hyundai had hoped. The more well-known competitors in this segment are blowing it out of the water in terms of sales.

15 sedan and 2000 coupes?

pointless number if we don't have a breakout by sedan/coupe

Maybe, but given the fact that the Genesis sedan sold 1000-1200 units every full month it was on sale prior to the Genesis Coupe launch, I find that extremely unlikely.

The months immediately prior to the release of the Genesis Coupe, the sedan was selling 1,500-1,600 units monthly.

Even if the sedan's sales has slowed to 1,300-1,400 a month, that still leaves only 600-700 units of the coupe moving monthly, which was supposed to sell at a 3x rate of the sedan.

Either there is supply issues or the coupe just isn't selling even close to what Hyundai had expected (for comparison's sake, purely on a new model basis, Kia sold 4,853 units of the Soul and 3,631 units of the Forte last month).

A little perspective, not knowing the sedan/coupe breakdown:

Genesis, in July, outsold the Lexus LS and GS combined.

Genesis, in July, sold virtually the same # as Toyota's Avalon.

Again, not knowing the breakdown makes it hard to compare apples to apples. But for argument's sake, say Hyundai sold only 500 coupes. That still leaves a VERY strong showing for the sedan.

My 2 cents...

Is it safe to assume that the data aggregates other manufacturers who sell coupes under the same model as the sedan? e.g Infiniti G-series

Excellent question, and probably a great point.

Also, I didn't see Acura TL #s but the RL sold only 300 or so.
If anyone else wants to look I'm sure the numbers are out there.

One final point: I heard that Hyundai gave its dealers CFC $$ up front, and that they offered same all of July unlike others who waited until the end of the month. Nice aggressive move by them.

I have to move this into the Genesis News area because Genesis Sales Reports do not separate Sedans and Coupes...

According to TTAC, Genesis sedan sales matched Avalon sales for the month. That's not a bad result for a generally more expensive vehicle with less of a history.

One of those July sales was mine!

Without me the sales would have only been 2,014!!!! AND -- my brother bought an Azera - so we're doing our part!! We both absolutely love our cars. We were both were GM buyers, me Cadiallac and he Oldsmobile, who got so disgusted with the junk we were driving that we fled to Toyota. We each had three of their cars and now we;ve moved over to Hyundai. To me, there's nothing closer to the LS than the Genesis and the Azera blows away the Avalon.

WOW. That is awesome. For the Genesis to outsell the Lexus LS/GS has got to make Toyota quake in their boots. Lexus is a very popular brand around here. Once word of mouth of the Genesis value takes hold, it changes the whole luxury sedan brand dynamic (IMHO).

I agree. It is a very nice SUV. My relative was going to get an Edge, but after shopping the Vera Cruz picked one up for 29K and change, loaded. This was about 3K less than the Ford partner program pricing for a similar equipped vehicle.
