But it will help to sell more Sonatas, which has been the stated objective of Hyundai Motor America (according to its CEO and others) importing the luxury cars under the Hyundai brand name in the US, even though these same cars are not sold as a Hyundai brand outside of North America (no flying H on Genesis or Equus outside of North America).
 
Sonatas subsidize the Genesis/Equus. That doesn't mean the resemblance is welcome, but it is what it is.

A good/striking Sonata will help sell more Sonatas (and besides, Hyundai can't sell more Sonatas even if they wanted to since they don't have the production capacity).

From the start, I had an inkling that the new Sonata and Genesis will share design attributes, but while it's OK for them to share the same basic design language, it's not OK for them to look too much alike (in some ways, I like the design of the Sonata better) since then you run into the Phaeton just being a larger, more expensive Passat problem.

Hyundai needs to keep enough differentiation btwn its mainstream lineup and its luxury lineup - and it can be done just by making some modest changes to the grill, headlights and taillights.
 
There are indeed some similarities, but c'mon people no one will ever confuse the two.
 
With a lite chrome on the rear, the Genny would be perfect.

How is this any difference than what BMW does? Or {insert manufacturer} does?
 
It will be interesting to see how the new Sonata competes against the Kia Optima, which has sold well and gotten raves. The Kia Cadenza has also gotten a leg up on the Azera in many reviews.
